Low Tide at Garden Cliff, Westbury on Severn

Ashore

A rare sight . A `very low tide and lack of silt obscuring surface.

Hand dyed fabric combined with free machining and embellished with stone fragments from site and beads. Framed in a deep slate frame inside and out.

Aground

Inspired by the extreme low tides at Garden Cliff on the River Severn. A contemplation of sights, sounds and texture. Honey comb fragment found on the tide line was used to add a wax element in places. Pigment collected from the cliff was also rubbed onto the surface. Finally mounted and stitched with wire onto a slate backing.

Crankle I

Crankle: to bend, turn, twist, crinkle

Slate combined with natural dyed fabric using combinations of Madder, Brazilwood and Logwood. Stitched into Freeform pleats echoing rock strata and water ripples.

Purton Boat Graveyard

Pigments collected from the shores of the River Severn prepared and ground and painted onto linen fabric. The fabric is then left to cure for several months before being sympathetically stitched into to portray the vast and eerie space that can be experienced at low tide.

This process was taught by  Claire Benn from an online course run by Fibre Arts Take Too.

Honesty

Honesty seed pods trapped delicately between wild silk fibres.

Low Ebb I

Numerous mono prints were made onto rice paper. These were then torn, manipulated and collaged to create these images of the River Severn at low ebb.

Slate Frames

The frames were made from upcycled roof slates. Centres drilled out to create the apertures. Fractures joined with copper and soldered on the back.

Harvest Moon

The harvest moon is often a deep rich red and as it rises over the horizon can appear very large and imposing.

Wolf Moon

Wolf Moon is the full moon in January. Supposedly because wolves were more likely to be heard howling in the cold winter months when food was scarce.

This piece was inspired by seeing  the full moon in January sitting above the hill in daylight as I drove home.

Winter Light

A mixed media painting 1 metre x 1 metre produced over a 5 day residency.

This was inspired by driving through the Forest of Dean, where I live, in the depths of winter. A time with little colour, until suddenly the sun comes out and shines through the trees. Suddenly colours glow and seem to come from nowhere. An uplifting happening and makes my heart sing.

It is made up with many layers. Torn and coloured  papers or various types from tissue to heavy brown paper. Painted iron on vilene was further added to create further texture.

Forest Floor

Painted teabag papers, that are layered and cut into with foil inserted.
