Wye?

WYE? A large upcycled roof slate showing the course of the River Wye is inlaid with copper.. Chicken wish bones, symbolising the many chicken farms situated in the Wye catchment area are mounted onto the slate eerily looking like hunting trophies as were displayed in great halls and stately homes in the past. These are hung with enamelled fish skeletons, weighted by lead weights so highlighting  the scale of pollution within our rivers and illustrating why they are suffering and the state of the river’s food chain.. However hope is not lost as the wishbones symbolise.

Pitcher

Two stories that are fundamentally different but merge into this one object.

The first part goes back about 10 years when we had a glut of fruit flies in our kitchen that seemed to be unstoppable. We decided to buy some carnivorous plants to see if these may help. They were great and fascinating to watch. However, one plant was so successful it caught so many fruit flies that it bust its gut!

The second part of the story is a recent experience I felt when this summer we went to Tenby. Admittedly it was high summer so inundated with holiday makers, us included.

I live in the Forest of Dean so am unused to multitudes of people and crowds. I even avoid music festivals as I do not like being with large numbers of people. So, there I was in Tenby, a fabulous place, but it was streaming with large people consuming food, and nearly every family had a least 1 dog often more. I suffered culture shock. I was overwhelmed and just thought how can our world cope with the number of humans living on it? There were many thoughts I had pertaining to this.

On the way home these two stories merged into this visual parallel of the Pitcher plant that bust its gut and now from the number of consuming humans on the planet.

Thus this pitcher plant has humans and dogs bursting out of its gut.

Leap

A slate ‘leap’ made from upcycled roof slates. Mounted onto a section of railway sleeper and in this instance positioned over a pond.

Fine Kettle of Fish

Fine Kettle of Fish

Our rivers are dying. We humans are responsible. What a fine kettle of fish we have created.

Fabric fish created from scraps and hand dyed and printed fabrics. Jumping out of an old cast iron kettle, escaping the condition of the water!

Freedom

Idea

I love the idea of sardines bouncing into life once the can is opened.

Sardines made from scraps of material leftover from past projects
